WCASA is extremely disappointed in the decision by Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley to not issue criminal charges against Officer Rusten Sheskey. This is sadly yet another example of how the justice system not only fails but also causes harm to Black people in this country. As a result, Black sexual violence survivors face significant risks when interacting with a justice system that threatens the safety of their families and communities. Despite this, there are been significant investment in justice system responses to sexual violence over the years, even though most survivors choose not to engage with it and those who do are often re-traumatized by it. WCASA supports policies that reframe the concept of public safety by investing in community-based infrastructure to provide support in place of law enforcement.
