Human Trafficking is modern-day slavery. It is the second largest and fastest growing criminal industry in the world. Victims are trafficked by force, fraud or coercion primarily for the purposes of labor or sexual exploitation. Human Trafficking is a significant problem in Wisconsin, where domestic and foreign victims have been identified in both urban and rural communities.

Sexual Assault Service Providers (SASPs) are uniquely positioned to identify and support trafficking victims. Advocates and SANE nurses are likely to encounter trafficking victims, because they are often subjected to sexual assault. Traffickers use sexual violence as a primary tool of power and control against women and children regardless of what type of trafficking they are in. Service providers are often the first responders in cases of human trafficking, as well as partners in raising awareness around the issue of trafficking.
