Sexual Violence Prevention Work Webinar Series / Sexual Citizens: Sex, Power, and Assault on Campus

October 23, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

The link to the archived recording can be found below.

Presented by Jennifer S. Hirsch, Professor, Socio-Medical Sciences, Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University and Shamus Khan, Professor / Chair of Sociology, Columbia University

In this webinar, we invite Columbia professors Jennifer S. Hirsch and Shamus Khan, authors of Sexual Citizens: Sex, Power, and Assault on Campus, to discuss the research central to their book and their vision for campus sexual assault prevention. They will address sexual assault as a racial justice issue and the idea that sexual self-determination, and the obligation of respecting equivalent right in others, is everyone’s right.

Jennifer S. Hirsch is professor of socio-medical sciences at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. Her research spans five intertwined domains: the anthropology of love; gender, sexuality and migration; sexual, reproductive and HIV risk practices; social scientific research on sexual assault and undergraduate well-being, and the intersections between anthropology and public health. She’s been named one of New York City’s 16 ‘Heroes in the Fight Against Gender-Based Violence.’ In 2012 she was selected as a Guggenheim Fellow.

Shamus Khan is professor & chair of sociology at Columbia University. He is the author of dozens of books and articles on inequality, American Culture, gender, and elites. His work has appeared in the New Yorker, The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, and many other media outlets. In 2018 he was awarded the Hans L. Zetterberg Prize for “the best sociologist under 40.”

On this webinar, Hirsch and Khan will be interviewed by Dr. Kate Walsh, a licensed clinical psychologist and a tenured Associate Professor in Psychology and Gender & Women’s Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is the lead investigator on UW-Madison’s newly established interdisciplinary Sexual Violence Research Initiative. Her work addresses biopsychosocial and environmental risk factors for sexual violence victimization.
